What can I say?  I'm over the moon about the casting of the 12th Doctor. :)  As watchers might know, ginger acting powerhouse Ruth Wilson was my first pick, but once the rumors started that Peter Capaldi was in the running (despite his previous appearances in TORCHWOOD and WHO), and the announcement that Wilson was already doing a new series for Showtime, he shot to the top of my list.  Even without Whoniverse connections, he was a fave of mine b/c of THE THICK OF IT and, of all things, his recurring role as Sid's dad on SKINS (yes, I watched SKINS- deal with it).  He's also an old school Whovian.  Like Tennant, he's "one of us", living out a childhood dream.  That's ridiculously cool.  The guy even has a freakin' Oscar, making him the first Doctor to hold that distinction (look it up).

That live announcement was a lot of fun to watch.  I had talked myself out of the possibility it could be Capaldi, but when Moff implied it was someone they knew, and who watched the show, I started to wonder.  And then when we got a shot of the 12th Doctor's older, wedding-ringed hand waiting offstage... I got a really good feeling.  I literally punched the air when his name was said aloud.

He's a daring (but smart) choice after Smith.  We've gone from the youngest actor ever cast in the part to the oldest (John Hurt excepted).  Measuring from his debut in December, he'll be older than Hartnell by a matter of weeks.  It'll undoubtedly change the flavor of this next season of stories, and that's something to celebrate.  Here's to bold new directions!

And yes, for the people sending me notes on the subject- I'll do a pic of #12 as soon as we get some costume shots.  And there may be some other artwork coming even sooner...

P.S.: And by the way- yay for Moff's comments today confirming that Time Lords change gender and that a female Doctor is "absolutely within the rules".  Hopefully that'll shut up some rather disgusting people that've made some ugly comments on the "nay" side the last couple months (many were civil, but way too many weren't).  Even Steven Hawking spoke of it favorably.  He really IS a smart guy. ;)  This episode of the excellent "Verity!" podcast is worth a listen for a more intelligent debate on the subject than what I've seen around most parts of the internet: veritypodcast.wordpress.com/20…

The special was a bit too over-the-top overall, but I did like all the interviews and Matt's goodbye. Now I want to see "The Thick of It" very much. It's an exciting time to see how Peter's Doctor will follow Matt's Doctor portrayal.
