Just a minor bit of concept art, made for my epic fancomic project "THE DOCTOR & I" with Shawn Van Briesen:
The idea for the Doctor's mid-Time War look was that it'd reflect a bit of the proposed harder-edged costume McGann revealed a while back: [link] Since we have no idea where that costume will fit into the 8th Doctor's chronology (if it's ever used at all), I decided to do something that was similar but not the same. This could either be a halfway point to that look (showing a gradual change toward the look Christopher Eccleston sported), or something more Doctor-ish that came after the leather jacket phase (which I suspect we MIGHT see being incorporated by Big Finish for the post-Lucie Miller stories).
Anyway, for this costume, I went back to Eight's roots for inspiration. Having taken his original costume from the look of Wild Bill Hickock, I decided to look to a nearby time and place- the American Civil War. It's a bit of William Tecumseh Sherman, along with some minor Napoleonic touches. For the actual comic art, Shawn made the wise decision to lengthen his hair a bit- getting him closer to the Eighth Doctor we know and love (and also a bit more like WITHNAIL & I's Marwood).
Honestly, I prefer his costume from the TV movie over this. This one just does not seem like the Eighth Doctor, I especially thought that when I saw the actual new costume. Now this picture you drew of it..... This is pure awesome. I want this costume right here. You are a genius. Keep it up
<3 this! I mean, I like his original outfit, but this works better for a war.

Very well thought out and it does look like something the Doctor would wear in those sombre years. I do think he should keep the shoulder-length curls though.

Now he actually looks like he's involved in a war. But I still think he should be scruffier (maybe stubble like "End of Time" Master?), just to show how much physical and moral stress he's under fighting in the war...
