Superstoked pages 2 and 3 by PaulHanley Superstoked pages 2 and 3 by PaulHanley
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you my new regular webcomic... SUPERSTOKED!

Here's the opening "two page splash". Well, it would be, if it were in print anyway. I recommend using "full view" mode.

NEXT PAGE HERE: [link]
PAGE 1 HERE: [link]
SKIP TO ANY PAGE HERE: [link]

This is a comic I started drawing a year ago (I won't even tell ya how long ago I wrote the script for it), and a chunk of it's already "in the can". I'll start with three pages today. After that, the plan is one a week every Monday. That's the plan anyway.

This series is easily the most personal and beloved thing I've ever uploaded to DA, so if you dig it, please comment, fave it, feature it, spread the word, etc. Thanks. :)

Superstoked is 2010, Paul Hanley. And that's a bona-fide registered copyright folks. Just sayin'.

Richard would say they were all his "favorite". :D Thanks for the fave, BabyG.

Btw, how funny was that recent Richard Simmons edition of Jack & Rod? "GARY, WHERE ARE YOU?!! GARY!!! GAAAAARRRREEEE!!!"

And Bababooey to y'all...

Very nice indeed, thats a great page. Just two things, who is the cop shaking his fist at? And yeah Kid, those guys are gonna die of hypothermia before they are rescued, lol!

Thanks! The idea was supposed to be (and I don't think I got this across in the art with everything else going on), is that the "cops" are actually the armored truck drivers/ security guards. He's shaking his fist at the news chopper, which apparently is creating so much wind that it's scattering the money (possibly b/c the driver's side door, which we can't see, is frozen open and allowing an updraft to sweep the money out the back). Of course, he could just try jumping up and closing the back door-but whaddya expect from an average-wage scurity guard? :D

And yeah- the kid is absolutely right. The Freeze's powers are RIDICULOUSLY dangerous and impractical as a tool for fighting crime. More on that later. ;)

Thanks! The little details were what made this page fun to draw. I think my favorite thing is the guy who looks like a cross between Dennis Franz and Cheech Marin clutching the wads of cash in the background. Or the fact that no one's paying attention to the kid who has an M-16 within reach. :D

Out of curiosity, what would you rate the series, (using either the ESRB rating system, movie rating system, etc.)? My guess would be either ages 10+ or ages 13+, but I can't really tell.

I suppose 13+, roughly- just b/c I slip some subversive ideas in here down the road. But there's certainly no graphic violence or "explicit material". I deliberately created this to be mostly friendly to a general audience (which is unusual for me :D).

The guy with his tongue stuck to the phone pole--a la Christmas Story?

I feel like I'm playing Where's Waldo?

You're getting warmer- that guy IS the ref, along with a couple of the other would-be-armed-robbers...

There ya go! :) It probably would've helped if I hadn't made Tom Sizemore look like he just finished a month-long chili dog binge. Danny Trejo was originally in there too, but then I realized it needed a generic ski-masked guy to help make it clear that these guys were robbing the truck.

And it's HEAT- on ice! Get it? Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck!

Also, on the next page, the guy yelling from the Chevy Malibu is Harry Dean Stanton from REPO MAN. But only in my own weird little mind. :D

I"m liking the Lebowski reference. Oh yeah, and the art kicks butt.

Thanks very much! And yeah, the Freeze is the kinda Peter Parker-ish closet geek who quotes from movies left and right- so stay tuned for a lot more throwaway refs. There's actually another movie ref on this page, but it's a sight gag. I'm wondering if anyone'll catch it- it might be too subtle...

You talking about the name on the side of the armored car or the name of the news copter? Both were great.

Nah- those are just gag gags. :D Though actually, "Fux News" is a recurring bit I put in all sorts of things I do- including some animated films I've made: [link]
So I guess it kinda IS another film ref!

Love the way the top bad guys tongue is stuck to the lamppost. Little details like that really 'make' a comic.
Look forward to seeing what's next ;)

Thanks! I totally know what you mean- the bit with the tongue kinda made the page for me when I was drawing it. And wait'll ya see Page 5- it's a little-detail-palooza. There might even be a Doctor Who ref. ;)
