Really? That's awesome news. Maybe he's the War Chief (there are a lot of Roman soldiers running around). Damn, that guy's the Lon Chaney of Who. He was in what, KROTONS, WAR GAMES, MORBIUS, and KROLL... plus the second Cushing movie and a handful of Big Finish stuff. He's definitely a badass.
It could even be he's the big bad, as his role goes uncredited. It'd probably be a treat for him to return to the show after all these years as a main villain once more...God, imagine if he IS Morbius now, having stolen Solon's body! Or Omega!
Uncredited? Curiouser and curiouser... Well, he's played a series finale Big Bad before, in a sense (War Games, where he was one of the most chilling "human" villains in classic DW). Omega would be interesting...
I gotta say, I love that I have no clue whatsoever what's in the Pandorica. In previous seasons, the Big Bad revelation's almost always leaked out. Hopefully we can make it to Saturday without a Radio Times cover screaming, "IT'S THE MONOIDS!!!" or something.
And hey, did I hear Chelonians and DRAHVINS getting mentioned in the trailer?!!
True, true. And I also liked how this time the thread leading up to it seemed actually threatening and mysterious, rather than just a random phrase repeated every episode without much development.
And hopefully the reveal won't be as big an anti-climax as "Rose is the extra special wonder goddess of power", as in RTD's first finale. Jeez, that was embarassing.
I too am hopeful about the lineup - but also slightly worried that one or two of these classics might not get very much to do, due to screentime limitations - or it may be that some of them are only mentioned as being present, waiting outside in the wings while the others deal with the Doctor. The presence of the Roboform (Robot Santas) would imply that they're all after the supposed power of the Pandorica, like the various beings battling for control of Hell in Neil Gaiman's "Season of Mists".
Certainly there's going to be a lot of growling, and maybe one or two legionaries getting offed.
Yeah, I think the "Season of Mists" assessment is right on the money. Course, for all we know, maybe they all want to STOP something??? That'd be interesting. Anyway, I'm always happy when the Sontarans show up- I love those guys. And the tired old Cybusmen seem to be featuring in this (yawn... zzzz... oh- sorry fell asleep for a minute...)- I'm hoping that's so they can be monumentally offed once and for all (kinda like how the RTD Daleks got that last bit of face time before they got wiped out by the new ones). Maybe even erased in the crack- that'd be good. Then next season we can get the REAL semi-organic Mondas-descended Cybermen to finally return.
That would gel with some people's ideas that the big bad is an evil version of the Doctor from some unspecified time period - the Valeyard, mayhap? Or the Dream Lord made flesh?
I too have been aggravated by the new Cybusmen - their uncanny resemblance to Iron Man with a pair of handles on his head taking precedent. The trailer seems to show some cool new features with the severed Cybusman head, though. Their getting erased by the crack would be awesome, but that may even be where they come from - weren't the majority of them launched into the void anyway? But of course the Mondas Cybermen would make mincemeat of them - all you have to do is remove the brain and the damn thing is useless. Plus you'd expect the originals to be more agile. Lots of leaping and dodging the slow old versions.
I get the feeling that Victory Of The Daleks was a bit of meta-commentary; the RTDaleks did look very much like man-made machines rather than aliens, to the point that Moffat says putting them in khaki with little British flags felt 'incredibly right'. The new ones sort of subscribe to that classic weirdness - they're strange, and alien, and the human mind reacts with caution/fear to strange and alien things. The new ones were easy to familiarize with because they were so tank-like; hence why you felt so sorry for the mass-murdering one in Van Statten's museum.
I have to confess, as my first-ever episode was "Doctor Who and the Silurians", I was mightily disappointed with Chris "Cyberwoman" Chibnall's lacklustre (and slightly sexist) episode - I would quite like to get a confrontation between all-new Silurians and something more akin to the older breed; a version that looks like the new ones, but with the old lizard-frills and third eyes.
In any case, amongst my blather, a final point; my favourite picks for the big bad in the Pandorica:
*The True Cybermen *Omega *Morbius *The Valeyard *The Dream Lord *Some other form of the Doctor from the future *Sutekh *The Beast *The Master, pre- or post- drumming sound *The 'REAL' Master (retconning the Jacobi/Simm version as a clone or something) *The Candy Man (It's TOTALLY unexpected! Think of the WTF!)
Yeah, I'm a big hater on the STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE-esque Nu Silurians. Check out the "previous polls" section on my front page for more commentary on that. I actually have a rough sketch for an illustration that incorporates all the Silurian races in one scene- hopefully I'll find time to finish that in the not crazy distant future.
Here's a crazy theory (and mind you, I think this sounds like fan-wanky nonsense even as I write it). The Valeyard was supposed to be an amalgamation of the Doctor's dark side between his "twelth and final incarnations" (notice not "13th", hmmmm...). WELL- if ya take #10's double regeneration/ Doctor #10.5 into account, you could arguably describe #11 as a 12th "incarnation" so to speak. And in that time between his being "incarnated" and whenever the next one will happen... the Dream Lord has appeared. Now, I don't think we're ever gonna see the Valeyard storyline pop up again, but oh man- wouldn't it be glorious if it did? Also we've seen these publicity photos of Daleks, Judoon, etc all apparently attacking the Doctor- trying to stop him becoming something, perhaps? And there's the murder River Song commits to consider. I'm probably on the wrong track, but I gotta wonder...
