Iris, Panda, and 105 by PaulHanley Iris, Panda, and 105 by PaulHanley
This is my contribution to Cody Schell's "105 Artists" project to promote the release of Obverse Books' MS. WILDTHYME AND FRIENDS INVESTIGATE [link] , featuring the Doctor's sometime-associate, Iris Wildthyme.
If you want to get involved with the project, contact Cody at: [link]

Here we have a scene from Iris' lost adventure "The Mind Jobber". After an accident involving a beryllium clock and Babycham causes her bus to explode, Iris and Panda find themselves in a pink void. Stranded with them are Iris' sometime-boyfriend, Mexican wrestler/ adventurer Señor 105 and his best friend Sheila (a sentient isotope of Helium that lives in a party balloon). They quickly find themselves surrounded by various versions of what appears to be the robot from the movie ROBOT VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY. 105 realizes they must be in the dreaded Land of Friction (a seedy sub-dimension of the more respectable Land of Fiction), where professional wrestling is actually real. They're eventually lured to a Mayan pyramid and confronted by the Land's "Master", the evil wizard Kayfabe (who turns out to be a rubbish disguise of psychic Persian wrestler Jabroni, one of 105's nemeses). Hijinks ensue.

Unforunately, the only tape of this adventure was wiped from BBC archives in 1976, while the only copy of the script was joyously burned by a cackling Phillip Hinchcliffe (with the last ashes smoked in Robert Holmes' pipe). Probably for the best, really.

Even for the Doctor Who Universe this is bizarre. :o

Iris is definitely a character who dwells at the weirdest edges of the Whoniverse (sometimes beyond them, in fact). :)

This is a masterpiece, without question. And the story that goes along with it, top notch! I think that is the difference between a mere "drawer" and an "illustrator" is the ability to tell a story with a drawing instead of just doing a pose. This tells a story even without your delightful comments.

I think you're going to scare away volunteers for my project, since yours is so good!

The new book (prose) featuring Seņor 105 is available from Obverse Books. The collection is called "Miss Wildthyme & Friends Investigate" and the novella is called "Elementary, My Dear Sheila" (it's a mystery murder story).

Thanks, man! I've actually enjoyed pretty much all of the contributions to the "105 Project". A big part of the fun is the range of styles. And in fairness, I probably put way more time and effort into this pic than most sensible contributors would (probably a good 12-14 hours, I'd bet). I'd already been wanting to do some Iris & Panda fan art for a while, so I was ready to go the extra mile on this one. Still, if I do dominate the competition, I don't exactly mind. ;) :D

OMG this is so EPIC!!! I really really love Iris and Panda, they are awesome! And the characters you've created fit sooo well in Iris' world, it's amazing! I love hearing about your proyect, I'm going right now to that link to know more about it, because it's really promising!

Also, not only the idea is good here, but the art! :omfg: And as someone said before me, Iris' pose... :giggle:

Congratulations for your work, seriously! I'm looking to hearing more from you!!!

I can't take credit for any of the other chracters, sadly. Seņor 105 and Sheila are writer Cody Schell's creations (they've already appeared in the various Iris prose anthologies by Obverse books). And the robots are based pretty closely on the spectacularly crap 'bot from the movie ROBOT VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY (a MST3K classic). Glad ya dig the picture, though! :)

Bad touch, El Santo!

This is one of those rare deviations where the Artist's Comments are just as entertaining as the picture itself. WOW.

And I fail at knowing little to nothing about Iris :/

Aw, thanks! I like to think of myself as a writer first and an illustrator second (sucks that I'm still not published as the former, though), so that makes me smile. :)

Iris mostly hails from the Eighth Doctor novels (though she's also appeared with other Doctors in various books, short stories, and audio plays). She was a very eccentric "trantemporal adventuress" who may or may not have been another renegade Time Lord. More info on her here: [link]

That's fantastically fabulous. I love Iris I do!

Unless I miss my guess, isn't Iris' pose lifted from a certain, more infamous Dalek pic with Ms. Manning? ;)

Oh, absolutely! Very much part of the joke. :D Actually, it being Iris, ya have to wonder why I bothered adding clothes. :eyepopping:
