Doctor Who: Fade Away pg 4 by PaulHanley Doctor Who: Fade Away pg 4 by PaulHanley

PAGE 1 HERE: [link]

Page 4 of our 9-part story. Art by my talented bud and collaborator Shawn Van Briesen :iconvanbriesen: , story, colors, and lettering by me.

So this glimpse of the Brigadier's future is what you'd call an "orgy of fanwankage". But screw it, it was fun as hell to do (even if I did put Shawn through hell making him draw all this insanity).

The top panel is of course directly from Paul Cornell's New Adventures novel "Happy Endings", in which the Brig is accidentally "regenerated" when the Master's plot to crash Bernice Summerfield's wedding goes awry.

The rest is mine and Shawn's (I left it to him to choose most of the "pieces"- though I will take credit for Frobisher). Just a crazy idea for a fun adventure we'll never see. My pal :iconfresian-cat: suggested incorporating the Celestial Toymaker into the story somewhere, as a nod to Michael Gough's sad passing. Too many great Who alumni have left us recently (I'm still in denial about Elisabeth Sladen...).

Well now I want to see this adventure! The Toymaker SO WOULD make them wear dumb chess hats. The expressions of the Brigadier and some of the others are PRICELESS!

Where's poor 11's fez? LOL

Oh, Tenny. "Knights have to do that little 'L' thing."
That's exactly why I loved Tenny :noes: I'll miss him, :L

This strip is wonderful. I'm not one for the traditional American comics (which is sad because I'm American). I'm more for anime. But I love me some Doctor Who *rape*

The art on this is spectacular~ keep writing it! ^^

Like Alan-WK I loved the scene from Bernice's wedding in NA Happy Endings. I love your work and maybe one day you could do a portrait of Benny like you have of the Doctor and other companions.

I'd eventually like to cover the other Doctors grouped with their companions, like I have for Eleven and Two. Whenever I do get around to Seven, Benny will most certainly have a very prominent placement in said pic- short of Ace, I can't think of anyone more important to Seven's stories. :)

Always good to see things from the New Adventures range of books realised in art form. Not enough NA artwork about in my humble opinion.

Totally agree. I've tried to compile what decent NA artwork I could find on DA over at my art group, The Space Museum [link] (look under the 7th Doc section), but it's a paltry amount for such a massive body of work (esspecially one which is to some the pinnacle of Doctor Who fiction in any medium).

First off that art group - The Space Museum - great place. No hesitation in adding it to my Watch lists. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Absolutely! The NA's and also the Missing Adventures, Past Doctor Adventures, Eighth Doctor Adventures ranges of books and the Big Finish audios have an absolute wealth of unique moments and characters and aliens and locations that most definitely need to be realised in art form. God knows if I had a smidgen of artistic talent I'd be drawing inspiration not just from the TV stories but from the books and audio stories too.

For fans, the book and audio fiction filled in DW's extended TV hiatus from '89 to '96 and then '96 to '05 with further stories and for that...for helping keep the flame alive...they deserve to be recognised far much more.

Elisabeth sladen's not dead, she merely slipped into an alternate universe in which no one has bodies so she had to leave her's behind. **is also in denial**

Great story so far, this page is just nutty love it lol. Elisabeth's passing surprised many people...including me. My exact words when i saw the new season's episode end credits dedication in her memory were 'Fuuuuuck! That's not fair, not her!' One of my favorite companions from the classic series.

Fabulous! (The entire comic is fabulous, of course, but this page is particularly so.) The chess game with the Toymaker is a great concept and getting all those Doctors and companions in there along with the Brig is the perfect finishing touch. So good! :D

It would've been fantastic, wouldn't it? I actually did send the script and Shawn's first page of pencils to The Powers That Be there, but sadly got no response, as has always been my experience with them. :( Now on the other hand, I DO work for IDW now. They'd never publish this (as apparently the Past Doctors are off limits over there), but I certainly do intend to send it their way once it's wrapped. I'd love to work on an "official" DW book w/ Shawn. :)

Well IDW has allowed past Doctor's before in stories like 'The Forgotten' and 'The Time Machination' though the current Doctor (10th) was still pretty much the focus of the story. Course, I'm pretty sure you already knew that, so I don't entirely know where I'm going with this... I think I'm just wishing you luck with it, it's certainly gave me a smile so far (Plus: Happy Endings!)
